The Human Effect: Environmental Awareness Poster Series (1)

Almost half of forests cleared are to make way for crops and pastures for animal grazing. But deforestation isn’t the only problem of animal agriculture relating to global climate change - the methane emissions from farm animals are just as damaging to our atmosphere as carbon dioxide emissions. The way we produce our food in mass quantities is not nature nor is it kind, but we cut corners for the sake of convenience and profit. What we eat matters to our planet.

The Great Barrier Reef and other life-sustaining coral reefs are bleaching and dying because they cannot withstand the rising ocean temperatures. Reefs are also threatened by the pH level of oceans becoming more acidic; another result of fossil fuels, like CO2 from factories and transporting and methane from factory farming, polluting our air and absorbing into the ocean. Chemical runoffs from eventually end up in the ocean, adding to the pollution, and overfishing only adds to the depletion of species. All of these harsh environmental changes make it difficult for our fragile ocean organisms to live and sustain an ecosystem that keeps everything on this planet alive; one ecosystem in danger means all ecosystems are in danger - everything is connected.

Our modern world overuses pesticides and chemicals as a ‘solution’ when it comes to getting rid of unwanted pests, growing crops, reducing weeds, and other natural processes. We think we’re helping production, when really we are only disrupting the natural cycle of our ecosystem, and poisoning ourselves in turn as chemicals used on lawns and gardens seep into groundwater and other systems we depend on. We have fallen into a dangerous cycle of trying to control and perfect something that was fine naturally on its own.

Every human on this earth leaves a carbon footprint just by existing. With a worldwide population of over 7.5 billion that is increasing by millions each year in a consumer society dependent on fossil fuels for production, industry and transportation, the skies aren’t looking clear and our air isn’t getting any cleaner. There are simply too many of us for this Earth to handle.
